Football Saturday and Pressing Questions

Hope everyone had a great Saturday.  My humans are a college football family, especially when Florida State University Seminoles are playing.  We spent quality time watching college football yesterday.
FSU beat Univ of Miami!!  Go Seminoles.  And in honor of the great win, I'm presenting the FSU War Chant.  Feel free to join in with voice and arm movements, too.

Hu-mom has some questions to ask you guys.

1. Mack is suffering, again, from face itchies.  Is there anything speical your humans do for you to help this besides the normal anti-bi-otics and STERIODS, allergy shots and medicated shampoos? He is also on the raw diet. RX's help while he is taking them, then when stopped, it starts up again.  (Steriods have not made Mack any more muscles.) It seems like he is always on STERIODS.  Oh, and by the way, since the vet phoned instead of a regular office visit, we had his RX's filled at Wegmans grocery store.  They participate in the free anitbiotics program that so many other stores advertise.  So Mack's antibiotics were FREE!  Can you believe that?  Hu-mom was shocked.  So check it out in your area if you need antibiotics that is of a common type.  Most stores have the freebies listed on their website. We usually get the RX's directly from the vet.  Maybe the vet's need to be made aware of this a well. Now Wegmans pharmacist did not have the small antibiotics in pill form, but agreed with the vet that the liquid was fine.  Hu-mom just mixes the liquid with a little meat baby food and Mack loves it. Salinger's mom said she has special face wipes that helps Salinger.  She is going to email hu-mom the name of them.
When Mack got up yesterday morning, he had rubbed the fur off his forehead and it was bright red!
Hu-mom said we can't go to the dog park until Mack has good scabs on his forehead  :(.

2. This one is harder.  There are so many good doggie/kitty blogs out there, how do you have time to read them all and post new ones on your own blog?  Is there a "magic" number of blogs you limit yourself to reading?  Mack and I could read them all day, but hu-mom does not let us on the 'puter unless she can supervise us....

We look forward to hearing from you!  Enjoy the remainder of the weekend.  We have Monday off from work, a holiday!!! Yes, I can sleep in again.

Go Seminoles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okays...this treatment is expensive...but it works and we think it made all the difference in the World for Toby Moses. It is called VARL antigen. What happens? The vet takes some blood from Mack. Sends it to California to be analyzed. Anything Mack is Allergic too shows up and the California-based company creates an antigen that contains the allergen to combat his itchies. The vet visits in the beginning are many but once Mack is on the 1.0mL injection, you can give them at home once a month or during heavy itchies every 3 weeks. Toby used to do antibiotic and steriods and allergy shots...to no avail as he would be itchy within 72 hours. This treatment works and is well worth the $200 per serum...which lasts anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. Toby used to get rashes, loose his fur-fur, and also develop many postules. So...that's our opinion on that.
On the questions of the blogs, we check them out multiple times a day and we just follow as we can...that's probably why we don't join blog rolls as they have over 140 new blogs at once and we just follow those that peak our interest...and we maybe add 1 now and again when our furiends mention a very funny or heartwarming blog.
Much luvums and huggums,
The Slimmer Puggums

We love football here too! Congrats of the win over Miami! We're Virginia Tech Hokies fans here. So sorry about Mack's itchies. I wish we had a suggestion for you, but thankfully we haven't had a similar problem. I've been reading dog blogs for a while now, and just started my own about 3 weeks ago. I try to read as many as possible during the busy work weeks, and definitely like to catch up on the weekends. It's a great way to meet other animal loving people! Here's wishing you a very happy Sunday!

Mom just emailed you, but we'll share with the class too...they're prescription wipes from the vet (read: crazy expensive!) called "Pledgets". Good old fashioned Benedryl helps too!

Poor Mackie...give his raw little smushed face some extra kisses from us!

Love,

We are on the Plechner protocol for our allergies. You can read about the process and protocol, see if it might work for you, in Pets at Risk by Dr. Alfred Plechner. It has worked wonders. We are starting the stage where we take pills instead of shots which is progress, but we are having a bit of a challenge in balancing the hormones. Our vet contacted Dr. Plechner for advice and we are making some food adjustments.

In the meantime, there are different kinds of over the counter allergy meds that pups can take. So if Benadryl isn't helpful, you might try Claritin or another one we can't remember the name of. But you can ask your vet about dosage and which ones are safe.

We are allergic to fleas and some foods, but not pollens. But our vet was telling us if that if our allergies were seasonal, that a good wipe down after coming in the house would be really helpful. A plain old baby wipe on the paws, up the legs and belly for sure. And the face if there's a lot of sniffing going on. Lots of cleaning like vacuuming and dusting to get rid of the pollens and allergy filters in the air conditioner.

As for blogs, we tend to stick with pug blogs. There's just too many out there. Even with the pug ones, we had to turn off the RSS because our inbox gets way too full. And mom reads some of them on her blackberry at work while she's stuck in meetings.

Sorry to hear about Mack's allergies.
At the clinic where I work the docs recommend sometimes Benadryl, Chloretrimeton, and Clariten for over the counter meds, but there is also a prescription anthistimine that some vets have that is a bit stronger called Hydroxyzine-maybe your vet has that. Some vets also say that using Frontline monthly will help raise the itching threshold of a dog with allergies, not sure if this true or not since I have been lucky enough never to have a dog who suffers from allergies.(knock on wood)

As for blogging, it's hard to keep up, so I just set a time limit for myself and try to stick to it:)

Bummer about Mack's skin allergies! We live in the South and that can bring lots of allergies in the summer! We gets lots of bath with medicated shampoo, some of us get Benadryl. Aspen had some crazy skin crud going on with her ears, neck and elbows. Our vet gave her a plant-based steroid that she said was gentler on her system. Have we already told you about that one? Anyway, seems to have helped a lot.

If you figure out the solution to keeping up with all the blogging friends, please let us know!!!

I am so sorry for your itchy suffering guys.Mom uses chlorhexadine solution from the vet toclean our mugs. She also read where it can also help red paws with soaking.
Sometimes Mom uses Listerine too for our stops (Wrinkles above the nose.) I know it sounds crazy, but she learned it from a lady who has rescued a bunch of pugs over the years. She said the antiseptic properties work on the skin and it is way cheaper than stuff from the vet. We seeaholistic vet for accupuncture and she also uses chinese herbal remidies. You may be abletocheck into that too.Lots of options, hard to know which way to go.I hope you feel better real soon.
We do our best to keep up. We don't always comment. But it can be hard. We just try not to stress. Sometimes life gets busy. Fellow bloggers understand. This is supposed to be fun,no pressure.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about Mack's itchies! We don't really have any suggestions but hope you find some solution soon.

As for keeping up with blogs - oh, we have the same problems too! All the time! It can get very stressful sometimes. We try our best to visit everybody at least once a week but the list of friends is just so long. And I always like to leave a comment when I visit - I don't like to just read and leave. So sometimes I would rather wait until I have time to visit properly - even if it means I am late and have to catch up (like I'm doing now with you!). We don't set a certain number to follow but I have to admit that if a certain doggie never visits me back, then I sort of stop visiting him too. I know that sounds mean but Hsin-Yi says we have to draw the line somewhere otherwise she would never get any work done and only spend all her time helping me visit friends. And since visiting blogs and leaving comments is about "being friends" - so then it should be a two-way thing. Otherwise it would be like talking to someone who never says anything back to you - well, that's not being very nice friends and you might as well not bother! :-)
